A review into the University of Aberdeen has revealed reports of internal “power struggles” and a “toxic culture” within its leadership. The independent assessment, seen by BBC Scotland News, found that the university’s governance was overly complex and lacked clarity, leading to inefficiencies and staff frustration.

The report, conducted by SUMS Consulting, described blurred boundaries between decision-making bodies and inconsistent committee practices. These issues, it said, had caused disempowerment and wasted staff time.

While noting some strengths, the consultants highlighted “significant challenges” across governance structures.

Governance Challenges and Internal Tensions

The review cited “power struggles” between the university senate and senior management, with decisions allegedly obstructed by competing interests. Within senate meetings, some members described intimidating behavior, a toxic atmosphere, and an overstretched remit.

This environment reportedly caused some to disengage entirely from governance duties.

The report recommended simplifying decision-making processes, clarifying roles, and promoting greater transparency. It called for a shift away from a “blame culture” toward collaboration and trust.

University Response and Future Plans

A university spokesperson acknowledged the higher education sector in Scotland faces “unprecedented challenges.” They said the report was commissioned to help improve the efficiency and transparency of governance.

The findings, they added, will inform the university’s “Adapting for Continued Success” programme, aimed at rebuilding confidence and accountability.

The Aberdeen University Students’ Association also urged leaders to embrace transparency, saying strong governance is essential during a period of financial strain across the sector.

Leadership Changes and Financial Pressure

The review’s release coincided with the arrival of new principal Professor Peter Edwards, who replaced Professor George Boyne.

In his first message to staff, Prof. Edwards said he aimed to raise transparency within leadership and welcomed open dialogue with the university community.

The university has faced several challenges in recent years, including staff redundancies and the discontinuation of certain degree programs. It continues to address a £5.5 million funding gap and has reopened a voluntary severance scheme to manage costs.

A Chance for Reform

Analysts view the SUMS report as a critical opportunity for Aberdeen University to reset its governance. Observers note that while tensions between financial oversight and academic priorities are common, the report exposes deeper cultural and behavioral problems.

The university’s leadership now faces the task of rebuilding trust, simplifying structures, and ensuring a more collaborative environment for staff and students.
