Los Angeles: Renowned actress Diane Ladd, celebrated for her powerful performances in Hollywood classics and nominated three times for the Academy Awards, has passed away at the age of 89.

Her daughter, Oscar-winning actress Laura Dern, confirmed the news on Monday, sharing a heartfelt tribute.

“My amazing hero and my profound gift of a mother, Diane Ladd, passed with me beside her this morning,” Dern said in a statement, noting that her mother spent her final moments peacefully at home in California.

Ladd’s cause of death has not been disclosed.

Born in Mississippi, Ladd had a remarkable career on stage and screen spanning more than six decades. She earned widespread acclaim for her 1974 role in Martin Scorsese’s Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, which earned her her first Oscar nomination. She went on to appear in more than 120 film and television projects, including Wild at Heart, Chinatown, and the 2022 film Gigi & Nate.

Ladd’s personal life was marked by resilience and deep family ties. She was married to actor Bruce Dern from 1960 to 1969, and the couple had two daughters — Laura Dern, and Diane Elizabeth Dern, who tragically passed away as an infant in 1962.

Despite early heartbreak, Ladd and Laura went on to develop a powerful mother-daughter bond both on and off screen. The pair shared the screen multiple times, including in Wild at Heart, HBO’s Enlightened, and most famously, Rambling Rose, which resulted in a historic moment — the first time a mother-daughter duo were nominated for Oscars for the same film.

In 2023, the two co-authored a memoir titled Honey, Baby, Mine, reflecting on life, family and Ladd’s legacy.

Despite initially discouraging Laura from entering the film industry, Ladd later said her daughter proved she was destined for acting. “I told her to be a doctor or a lawyer,” she once recalled. “But all she ever wanted to be was an actress.”

Diane Ladd leaves behind a remarkable creative legacy and a profound impact on film and television — and on generations of actors who followed her.
