The Schwarzman Centre, designed by renowned British architects Hopkins Architects, has opened in the heart of Oxford’s Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, marking a major new cultural and academic hub.

The project, developed by Oxford University with the support of philanthropist Stephen A. Schwarzman, represents the largest single gift in modern history to the University. Thanks to additional donations, Schwarzman’s total contribution now stands at £185 million.

The centre unites Oxford’s internationally recognised Humanities faculties for the first time, including English Language and Literature, History, Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics, Medieval and Modern Languages, Music, Philosophy, and Theology and Religion. It also houses the Institute for Ethics in AI, the Oxford Internet Institute, and the new Bodleian Humanities Library.

Public engagement is a key feature of the Schwarzman Centre. Its performance and exhibition spaces include:

  • Sohmen Concert Hall (500 seats)
  • 250-seat theatre
  • Black box immersive performance space
  • Dance studio and cinema
  • Exhibition gallery and museum, including the renowned Bate Collection of historic musical instruments
  • Café and bar, all set within extensive gardens

The centre is designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, blending academic research with public cultural programming, and offering a world-class platform for both scholarship and performance.

With its combination of cutting-edge humanities research, AI ethics, and immersive arts spaces, the Schwarzman Centre positions Oxford at the forefront of global cultural and academic innovation.
