A museum in Verona, Italy, is urging visitors to treat its artworks with care after two tourists damaged a crystal-covered installation before fleeing the scene.
The incident occurred at the Palazzo Maffei Museum, where Nicola Bolla’s “Van Gogh” chair—a delicate sculpture encrusted with crystals—collapsed under the weight of a man posing for photos. Security footage shows the two visitors, a man and a woman, taking turns pretending to sit on the chair when the male tourist lost balance, causing the chair’s legs to buckle.
The pair reportedly left the gallery before staff discovered the damage. Police are investigating but have not yet identified the suspects.
Museum director Vanessa Carlon released a statement urging greater respect for artworks, noting how easily social media photo culture can lead to carelessness.
“Sometimes we lose our brains to take a picture, and we don’t think about the consequences,” she said.
