Experts Recommend Measures to Attract Birds, Butterflies, and Wildlife as HYDRAA Revives Hyderabad Lakes

Hyderabad is witnessing a renewed focus on urban biodiversity as the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) continues its lake rejuvenation projects. Bathukamma Lake, recently restored by the agency, became the center of the city’s festive celebrations, drawing public attention to HYDRAA’s environmental initiatives.

So far, HYDRAA has rejuvenated six lakes in Hyderabad and submitted proposals for 14 more. Conservationists and biodiversity experts have urged authorities to take proactive steps to restore the ecological balance in these water bodies. Botanists recommended planting native trees and vegetation to provide food and shelter for birds, butterflies, dragonflies, and other wildlife.

The 16-acre Nalla Cheruvu in Kukatpally, once choked with debris, has been restored to a 28-acre lake, showcasing the potential of scientific lake management. Experts stressed the need for a comprehensive ecological plan, introducing native species while preventing exotic species from disrupting the local ecosystem.

“Urban lakes are more than water bodies; they are habitats for multiple species. Restoration efforts must prioritize biodiversity to maintain ecological balance,” said Chemela Srinivas, professor of Zoology.

With thoughtful planning and native species introduction, Hyderabad’s rejuvenated lakes can become thriving ecosystems supporting birds, butterflies, terrapins, and other local fauna, while offering residents green, ecologically rich spaces.
