Japan Faces Asahi Product Shortages Following Major Cyber-Attack

Japan is experiencing a shortage of Asahi products, including its popular beers and bottled teas, after a cyber-attack disrupted the company’s domestic operations. The attack, which affected Asahi’s ordering and delivery systems, has halted production at most of the brewer’s factories since Monday.

Major Japanese retailers, including FamilyMart and Lawson, have warned customers that Asahi products may be in short supply or temporarily unavailable. FamilyMart stated that its Famimaru bottled tea range, produced by Asahi, is expected to be particularly affected, adding that the company is working closely with Asahi to resume sales.

Lawson confirmed that some Asahi products would be in short supply and said it is stocking alternative products to mitigate the impact. Japanese supermarket chain Life Cooperation also cautioned that Asahi items may soon go out of stock.

Asahi, Japan’s largest brewer, produces Super Dry beer, soft drinks, and food products, and owns global brands including Peroni, Pilsner Urquell, and Grolsch. Japan accounts for roughly half of Asahi’s total sales. The company also owns Fuller’s in the UK and supplies own-brand goods to retailers such as FamilyMart.

The brewer confirmed that the cyber-attack is limited to its domestic operations and stated that no customer personal data had been compromised. “We are actively investigating the cause and working to restore operations; however, there is currently no estimated timeline for recovery,” the company said.
