Simon Fraser University (SFU), located near Vancouver, will unveil its first purpose-built art museum—the Marianne and Edward Gibson Art Museum—on 20 September. This admission-free, single-level institution includes a central hearth that serves as a research laboratory for art and learning, uniting campus life with creative exploration.
The 12,000 sq ft building, designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects and Iredale Architecture, will feature an art studio, courtyard, and salon—spaces thoughtfully interconnected to echo SFU’s original interdisciplinary vision. The inaugural show, Edge Effects, explores the interface of disciplines and context, reflecting both ecological and intellectual “edges.
With an ethos grounded in inclusivity and cross-disciplinary exchange, the museum embodies the late Edward Gibson’s vision: an art institution that fosters conversation across disciplines, generations, and cultures.
