India to Continue Russian Oil Imports Despite Trump’s Warnings, Say Officials

India will continue purchasing crude oil from Russia despite recent warnings and threats of economic penalties from U.S. President Donald Trump, according to two senior Indian government officials who spoke with Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Their comments come just days after Trump suggested that India might face sanctions or new penalties for continuing energy and defense trade with Russia. In a post on Truth Social, the former U.S. President hinted at imposing fresh restrictions, particularly over India’s purchase of Russian arms and oil.

Last week, Trump also introduced a 25% tariff on a wide range of Indian exports to the U.S., adding to growing economic pressure between the two countries
What Trump Said

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump claimed he was informed that India would stop buying oil from Russia, signaling a belief that his threats were yielding results. However, Indian officials have refuted those claims, making it clear that energy security and economic strategy remain top priorities for the country.

Why India Is Staying the Course

India has been one of the largest importers of discounted Russian crude oil since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war. The move has allowed India to:

  • Control domestic fuel prices
  • Strengthen strategic ties with Russia
  • Diversify its energy sources

One official stated, “We are not changing our position. We will continue buying oil from wherever it suits our national interest. That includes Russia.”

Geopolitical Tightrope

India has carefully balanced its diplomatic relations with both the U.S. and Russia. While being a strategic partner in the Quad alliance with the U.S., Japan, and Australia, India has also maintained strong ties with Russia, especially in defense and energy sectors.

Analysts believe India is unlikely to bow to pressure unless formal sanctions are enforced. “India is navigating a complex geopolitical landscape, and oil is a critical component of our national needs,” said one Delhi-based foreign policy expert.

The Bigger Picture

  • India Russian oil imports reached record levels in 2023–2024.
  • U.S. trade penalties could further complicate Indo-American economic relations.
  • India remains committed to non-aligned energy diplomacy.
