To celebrate 50 years of creative exploration, world-renowned British artist Andy Goldsworthy has unveiled a major retrospective at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, hosted by the National Galleries of Scotland.
While organizers initially envisioned an outdoor-focused exhibition, drawing on Goldsworthy’s famed land art style—as he did at Edinburgh’s Botanic Gardens in 1990—the artist surprised them by requesting full access to the vast indoor space of the Royal Scottish Academy.
The exhibition showcases over 200 pieces, ranging from early photographs and sketchbooks from the 1970s to films and striking new installations inspired by the Academy’s neoclassical architecture. It provides a powerful, immersive journey through the evolution of Goldsworthy’s deeply environmental and site-specific artistic vision.
