Renowned entertainment mogul and billionaire art collector David Geffen is facing a lawsuit from his estranged husband, Donovan Michaels, for alleged breach of contract, according to a report by Variety.
Filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, the 33-page complaint accuses Geffen of exploiting Michaels during their nine-year relationship — which included two years of marriage — and using him as a “living social experiment” and “trophy” to present to elite social circles.
The lawsuit paints a dramatic picture of the couple’s dynamic, likening it to the storyline of the film Trading Places — casting Michaels as a “young vulnerable Black man, orphaned as a toddler,” and Geffen as a powerful benefactor cloaked in wealth, philanthropy, and celebrity status.
Geffen, 82, who is reported by Forbes to have a net worth of $9 billion, initiated divorce proceedings earlier, according to the filing.
The case is expected to attract significant media attention, given Geffen’s high-profile status in the entertainment and art worlds.
