A Bangladesh Air Force jet crashed into a school building in the capital city on Thursday, marking one of the deadliest aviation incidents in Dhaka in recent memory.
The aircraft, an F-7 fighter jet, went down during a routine training mission. Initial reports suggest the pilot attempted to eject but was unable to survive the crash. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, where parts of the school building were engulfed in flames and debris scattered across the area.
Authorities have yet to confirm the number of casualties, but officials fear that both military personnel and civilians may be among the victims. The school was reportedly closed at the time, which may have prevented an even greater tragedy.
This incident echoes a similar crash from 2008, when another F-7 training jet crashed just outside Dhaka. In that case, the pilot had ejected after detecting a technical issue but did not survive.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of Thursday’s crash, with early speculation pointing to possible mechanical failure. The Bangladesh Air Force has grounded its F-7 fleet temporarily as a precautionary measure.
