A heartwarming sight has taken over the streets of Southend-on-Sea and Leigh-on-Sea, as nearly 100 vibrant penguin sculptures have been installed as part of the “Waddle-on-Sea” sculpture trail, a public art initiative supporting Havens Hospices.

Unveiled on Friday, the trail features a mix of super-sized and baby penguins, creatively decorated by local artists and community groups. The cheerful installation is set to remain in place until 3 September 2025, offering locals and tourists alike a fun, interactive way to explore the city while supporting a great cause.

“The aim is to bring some joy and colour to Southend and ultimately raise money for local hospice care,” said Amy Dearing, director of fundraising and marketing at Havens Hospices.

Visitors are encouraged to follow the trail, take photos, and share them online, helping to raise awareness and funds for the charity, which provides essential end-of-life care and family support in the region.

This unique art event also includes educational materials and a map for trail-goers, making it a family-friendly attraction for the summer season.
