Liz Truss Opposes ‘Secretive’ Push to Return Parthenon Marbles to Greece

Former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss has added her name to a growing list of British political figures opposing efforts to return the Parthenon Marbles to Greece. In a strongly worded letter issued by the conservative advocacy group Great British Pac, Truss and other signatories accuse the campaign of being a “politically orchestrated and secretive” operation.

The letter, addressed to both the British Museum trustees and the UK government, criticizes what it describes as an “accelerating movement” to repatriate the ancient sculptures. The authors argue that the campaign is “heavily financed” and lacks transparency, warning that private negotiations may breach the museum’s fiduciary duties to the public.

“This movement to remove [the marbles] is not organic,” the letter claims, suggesting external political motivations rather than genuine cultural or ethical reasoning.

The Parthenon Marbles, also known as the Elgin Marbles, have long been a source of diplomatic tension between the UK and Greece. Greece has repeatedly requested their return, stating they were taken unlawfully during the early 19th century. Supporters of repatriation argue for the restoration of cultural heritage, while opponents maintain that the sculptures are legally held and globally accessible at the British Museum.

The museum has yet to respond publicly to the latest letter, though debates over the future of the marbles continue to stir controversy both in the UK and abroad.
