According to recent surveys, over 70% of shoppers now use mobile apps or online codes when making purchases — a significant rise from a decade ago. Popular apps like Honey, Rakuten, and RetailMeNot have replaced the once-popular paper coupon booklets. Meanwhile, retailers are also adapting, offering personalized discounts via email, apps, or loyalty programs.

“Consumers are still price-conscious,” said retail analyst Linda Barrett. “But now, it’s about convenience. Digital deals are faster, easier, and often more targeted to individual behavior.”

However, a niche group of savvy shoppers continues to clip physical coupons, especially for grocery and household items. These are often older consumers or extreme couponers who say printed offers still deliver the biggest savings when stacked with store deals.

The coupon culture isn’t dying — it’s evolving, with technology and shopping habits driving the transformation.
