The Pittsburgh Steelers’ first-round draft pick, Derrick Harmon, is grappling with heartbreak following the sudden passing of his mother, Tiffany Saine, just hours after his name was called in the 2025 NFL Draft. The 21-year-old defensive tackle from Oregon was selected with the 21st pick by the Steelers on Thursday night, but his joy was marred by devastating news.

In a phone interview with Pittsburgh media shortly after the draft, Harmon, visibly emotional, shared that his mother was on life support in a Michigan hospital at the time of his selection. He had planned to visit her immediately after the draft to share the life-changing news with her.

“It was a little bittersweet,” Harmon said. “My mom wasn’t with me. She’s at the hospital right now on life support. After I get off the phone with you guys, I’m going to head straight to the hospital and tell her her son got drafted.”

Sadly, just after Harmon made the call to the media, Saine passed away in the hospital, leaving the family and the Steelers organization in mourning.
