Kilmar Ábrego García, a Maryland man mistakenly deported to El Salvador by the Trump administration, has been transferred to a new prison after experiencing severe distress in the notorious Cecot mega-jail. U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen, who recently visited El Salvador, confirmed that García had been “traumatized” by his experience in the prison, where he felt unsafe due to the presence of other prisoners.
Van Hollen met with García and reported that the man, who had been detained in the high-security facility last month, was fearful of his surroundings. Over a week ago, he was moved to a different facility in El Salvador for his safety.
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the government must facilitate García’s return to the United States. However, officials from the Trump administration have continued to resist this order, delaying the man’s potential repatriation.
