On April 1, 2025, the University of Oxford, in collaboration with museums and art organizations across the UK, hosted ‘April Fakes Day,’ an event dedicated to uncovering the stories of historical fraudsters and forgeries. Spearheaded by Professor Patricia Kingori from Oxford Population Health’s Ethox Centre and The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH), the program delved into the motivations and methods of individuals who have deceived the public through art forgeries, medical quackery, and fabricated antiquities. The event featured exhibitions and interactive discussions, including a conversation with John Myatt, a prolific art forger of the 20th century, at the Ashmolean Museum. This initiative provided a platform to explore the ethics of fakery and its impact on society.
