Microplastics Infiltrating Agricultural Lands and Food Supplies

In Uganda’s Mbale district, renowned for its arabica coffee production, the proliferation of plastic bags, locally known as “buveera,” is causing alarm among farmers. The infiltration of plastics into agricultural lands is a growing global concern, with microplastics increasingly detected in soils, crops, and, consequently, the human food chain. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization reports that soils may now harbor more microplastics than oceans, posing potential risks to ecosystem health and human well-being. Addressing this issue is complex, as plastics are deeply integrated into modern agricultural practices. Comprehensive strategies, including improved waste management, development of biodegradable alternatives, and international cooperation, are essential to mitigate the pervasive impact of plastics on agriculture and food security.
