Greenland Parties Announce Broad Coalition Government

NUUK, Greenland: Greenland’s Democrats and three other parties announced a coalition government agreement on Friday, just ahead of a visit by US Vice President JD Vance to the Arctic island. This development comes amid renewed interest from US President Donald Trump, who has previously expressed a desire to acquire the semi-autonomous Danish territory.

The new majority government will be led by Jens-Frederik Nielsen, leader of the pro-business Democrats party. Nielsen had called on parties to set aside their differences and form a broad coalition to demonstrate unity, particularly in light of growing US interest in Greenland.

Election Results and Coalition Details

The Democrats, which advocate for a gradual move toward independence from Denmark, emerged as the largest party in the March 11 general election, tripling their seats to 10. The newly formed coalition now controls 23 out of 31 seats in Greenland’s parliament, representing a wide range of political perspectives.

However, the Naleraq Party, a strong pro-independence group that doubled its seats to eight in the election, has opted not to join the coalition.

This coalition is seen as a move to strengthen Greenland’s political stability while addressing both domestic concerns and international pressure surrounding the region’s future.
