March 21 (Reuters) – Pope Francis, 88, plans to make his first public appearance in more than five weeks this Sunday, offering a blessing from the window of his room at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he has been receiving treatment for double pneumonia, the Vatican announced.

The pontiff was admitted to the hospital on February 14 after developing a severe respiratory infection that required ongoing and evolving treatment. His condition had raised concerns worldwide, but Vatican officials have assured that the pope’s health is gradually improving.

During his stay at Gemelli Hospital, Pope Francis has been seen by the public only once, in a photo released by the Vatican last week, showing him deep in prayer inside the hospital chapel.

As preparations continue for his planned appearance on March 23, the Vatican expressed optimism about his recovery, although medical professionals remain cautious given his age and the seriousness of his condition.

The upcoming blessing is expected to offer reassurance to Catholics around the world, many of whom have been praying for the pope’s swift and complete recovery.
