A man in his 50s has died following a tragic seaplane accident on Montreal’s South Shore. The small aircraft flipped during takeoff from the Richelieu River around 11 a.m. on Friday, May 2, near Saint-Basile-le-Grand in Quebec’s Montérégie region, approximately 30 kilometers east of downtown Montreal.

The incident has prompted an official investigation by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB), which confirmed that a team of investigators has been dispatched to examine the crash site and determine the cause of the accident.

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) reported that the seaplane, a two-seat recreational aircraft, encountered difficulties during its takeoff run before capsizing in the river. One of the two men aboard was able to escape the sinking aircraft and swim to shore. He was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Unfortunately, the second occupant was found unresponsive inside the submerged plane. Emergency services pulled the man from the water, but he was later pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.

Witnesses along the Richelieu River said the aircraft appeared to struggle to gain lift before abruptly flipping onto its side and sinking. The area, popular for water sports and small aircraft activities, is now cordoned off as officials conduct their examination.

The surviving occupant, who has not been named, is reportedly cooperating with authorities and may be a key witness in understanding what led to the fatal incident.
